Harley, Edward (1689-1741); Lord Harley; from 1724 2nd Earl of Oxford; see DNB; Richard Maxwell, `Robert Harley, First Earl of Oxford (1661-1724) and Edward Harley, Second Earl of Oxford (1689-1741)', in Pre-Nineteenth-century British Book-collectors and Bibliographers, ed. William Baker and Kenneth Womack, DLB 213 (Detroit, Washington DC, and London, 1999), 123-30; The Diary of Humfrey Wanley 1715-26, ed. C. E. and R. C. Wright, II (London, 1966); according to Wright and Wright, p.xvi, €Wanley produced a catalogue of the Harleian printed books during the years 1716-17, now London, British Library, MS. Lansdowne 816: the books had shelfmarks I.A to XXVII.O.32 and running numbers (1-7040); however, a spot check, using the index bound at the end of the Lansdowne manuscript, did not reveal any incunabula; another catalogue, now London, British Library, MS. Harley 3886, compiled by Wanley in June 1722, includes a purchase record at the end, covering the period from Oct. 1722 to Jan. 1723/4; some of the information found there has no corresponding entry in Wanley's Diary; this catalogue does contain references to incunabula; all Harley's printed books were purchased by Thomas Osborne, who published [William Oldys], Catalogus Bibliothecae Harleianae, 5 vols (London, 1743-5); some of Harley's printed books have the corner of the front endleaf torn away; Oldham, Shrewsbury School Bindings, 114 suggests that this was done by Osborne for his third sale, of 1745; see also Howard M. Nixon, `Harleian Bindings', in Studies in the Book Trade in Honour of Graham Pollard, OBS Publications, NS 18 (Oxford, 1975), 153-94. ♦ Categorisation: Type: Person. Gender: Unknown. Dates: 1689 to 1741. Period: 17th century to 18th century.
