Arenberg, Engelbert-Karl (1899-1974), 10th Duke of Arenberg; a London picture-dealer, Thomas Grange, was put in charge of the dispersal of the library. The Bodleian bought direct from his agent, Laube in Zurich. Most of Arenberg's books have a tiny paper label near the top of the spine, with a running number in ink. On the Arenberg library see Claudine Lemaire, `La Bibliothèque des ducs d'Arenberg, une première approche', in Liber Amicorum Herman Liebaers, ed. Frans Vanwijngaerden, Jean-Marie Duvosquel, Josette Mélard, and Lieve Viaene-Awouters (Brussels, 1984), 81-106, with incunabula discussed especially at 88-93, and the sales ordered by the 10th Duke at 91-3; and Peter Neu, Die Arenberger und das Arenberger Land, 3 vols, Veröffentlichungen der Landesarchivverwaltung Rheinland-Pfalz, 52, 67-8 (Koblenz, 1989, 1995), with the Arenberg library discussed in vol. 1, 401-4, and vol. 3, 545-52; on the family see also Neu, and Prinz Jean von Arenberg, `Die Edelherren, Grafen, Fürsten und Herzöge von Arenberg', Die Arenberger. Geschichte einer europäischen Dynastie, vol. 1, ed. Franz-Josef Heyen (Koblenz, 1987), 1-42, with a genealogical table on p. 36 showing the 10th Duke of Arenberg; the principal bibliophile in the family was Engelbert August, 8th Duke of Arenberg (1824-1875) (A Second Selection of Printed Books mostly from the Fifteenth Century, the Property of Mr J. R. Ritman (London: Sotheby's, 5 Dec. 2001, p. 271)). ♦ Categorisation: Type: Person. Gender: Unknown. Dates: 1899 to 1974. Period: 19th century to 20th century.
