Palmer, Ralph (eighteenth century); perhaps to be identified with Ralph Palmer (d.1755); see Randall Davies, Chelsea Old Church (London, 1904), 215, who describes Palmer as the eldest son (although this contradicts the evidence presented on 207) of Ralph Palmer (1635-1715), grandfather of Ralph, 1st Earl Verney (d.1752); G.E.C., The Complete Peerage, V (London, 1926), 295-6); Brownbill considered that it was the third Ralph Palmer, who died in 1755: see The Coucher Book of Furness Abbey, II, ed. John Brownbill, Chetham Society, NS 74 (Manchester, 1915), pp. ix–x; the suggestion that there were three generations of Ralph Palmers receives support from Margaret Maria, Lady Verney, Verney Letters of the Eighteenth Century from the Manuscripts at Claydon House, 2 vols (London, 1930), II 107-8; for the `Bibliotheca Palmeriana' see also N. R. Ker, Medieval Manuscripts in British Libraries, III (Oxford, 1983), 732 and n.1, and A. N. L. Munby, Connoisseurs and Medieval Miniatures 1750-1850 (Oxford, 1972), 23, who notes that he has identified only about a dozen manuscripts formerly in the `Bibiotheca Palmeriana', some bearing the date 1747; among the manuscripts owned by Palmer are London, British Library, MS. Additional 33244 (Furness Coucher Book), New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, MS. 23, and Oxford, Worcester College, MS. 213. ♦ Categorisation: Type: Person. Gender: Unknown. Period: 18th century.
