of Birdsall, Yorkshire; various members of this family are listed in Venn pt 1, IV 123: probably to be identified with Robert Sotheby, matric. St John's College, Cambridge 1560, Inner Temple 1584; the Birdsall estate seems to have passed into the family of Lord Middleton through the marriage of Elizabeth Sotheby (d.1752) and Hon. Thomas Willoughby (d.1742), 2nd son of 1st Lord Middleton.
