Towneley, Richard (1629-1707); of Towneley, Lancashire; see C. Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners 1485-1714 (Cambridge, 1954), 248; a book-plate dated 1702 appears in several incunabula formerly owned by Towneley (Howe, Book Plates, no. 29653), including Rhodes 351 and Oates 1119, and also in Bodleian Library, 55 c.188 (Francis Trigge, To the Kings Most Excellent Maiestie. The Humble Petition of Two Sisters... (London, 1604); Towneley also owned F. Coster, Enchiridion (1585), which bears the inscription `Richard Townely de Townely', and is now Cologne, Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek, 1N1136; for books formerly owned by Towneley, and subsequently at St Edmund's College, Ware, see Edwin Burton, Catalogue of Books in the Libraries at St Edmund's College, Old Hall, Printed in England and of Books Written by Englishmen Printed Abroad to the Year 1640 (Ware, 1902), p. iv, with the suggestion that the books may have reached Ware via Bishop James Talbot (d.1790), q.v.; Richard Towneley's grandfather, another Richard Towneley, of Towneley Hall (1566-1628), gave £15 to the Bodleian Library in 1611 (Macray 423), and owned the following books now in the Bodleian, each of which has, on the lower cover, the arms of Towneley stamped in silver and dated 1603: GG 17, 18 Th.
