Analysis of Content

[a1r] Augustinus [pseudo-]: De dignitate sacerdotum. Incipit: ‘[O] veneranda sacerdotum dignitas, in quorum manibus dei filius velut in utero virginis incarnatur . . .’ CIBN gives reference to Walther, Initia, 13034.

[a2r] [Mapes, Walter pseudo-: Golias ad Christi sacerdotes.] Incipit: ‘[V]iri venerabiles, sacerdotes dei | Precones altissimi, lucerne diei'; 72 lines of ‘Vagantenstrophe.’ The Latin Poems Commonly Attributed to Walter Mapes, ed. T. Wright, Camden Society, 16 (London, 1841), 45-7, lines 1-68 only. See Walther, Initia, 20578. Wright has ‘beatissimi' as the second word on line one. The last four lines do not appear in his edition: ‘Qui sedet in solio summe maiestatis, | Vos purget a vitio, mundet a peccatis. | Vobis sit auxilio uestre pietatis, | Ut abrahe gremio fine sedeatis'. On the identity of ‘Golias' see A. G. Rigg, ‘Golias and other Pseudonyms', Studi Medievali, 3rd ser., 18 (1977), 65-109, and P. G. Walsh, ‘Golias and Goliardic Poetry', Medium Aevum, 52 (1983), 1-9.
