[a2r] Augustinus [pseudo-: Preface to Manuale.] PL XL 951. In this version, part of the preface has become chapter 1, and what in other versions is called chapter 1 is here chapter 2.

[a2r] Augustinus [pseudo-]: ‘De salute siue aspiratione animae ad deum.’ [Also known as Speculum or Manuale.] PL XL 951-62. For the composition of Manuale see Wilmart, Auteurs spirituels, 195-6. Here the shorter version, chapters 1-24 only, with extra final phrase added ‘ . . . et in eum perseuerem usque in finem uitae meae.’

[b10r] ‘In laudem scriptoris epigramma.’ [Epigram on the printer.] ‘Gloria debetur Girardo maxima Lisae'; 3 elegiac distichs.

Binding: Nineteenth-century faded gold-tooled red morocco; on both covers double fillets form a border with rosettes in the corners; gilt foliage and floral roll on the turn-ins; blue-black pastedowns; gilt-edged leaves; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Thorpe's catalogue attributes the binding to Lewis [Charles Lewis (1786-1836)].

Size: 185 × 133 × 10 mm.

Size of leaf: 180 × 124 mm.

Provenance: Purchased for £2. 12. 6: see Thomas Thorpe (1791-1851), Catalogue (1833), part I no. 297, and Books Purchased (1833), 3, where it is described as an 8°.
