Incipit: ‘[E]n l'an mil cent quatrevingtz auoit en Flandres vng conte nomme . . .’ Le Livre de Baudoyn, conte de Flandre; suivi des fragments du Roman de Trasignyes, ed. E. P. Serrure and A. Voisin (Bruxelles, 1836), reprint of the edn Chambéry 1485 (GW 3729). The heroes are probably Count Baudouin VIII of Flandres (1150-1195, see Stokvis III 494-5; LMA I 1371; Jacques Falmagne, Baudouin V, comte de Hainaut, 1150-1195 (Montreal, 1966)) and Fernão of Portugal (1188-1233, see Stokvis II 28); the latter was the third son of King Sancho I of Portugal (1154-1211) and married, in 1212, Joanna (1188-1244), daughter of Baudouin IX Count of Flanders and grand-daughter of Baudouin VIII.

Binding: Eighteenth-century(?) quarter calf, the spine gold-tooled; the boards covered with Buntpapier.

Size: 265 × 195 × 22 mm.

Size of leaf: 260 × 190 mm.

Manuscript note on g8v.

Provenance: Guillaume de Bure (1734-1820); on the front pastedown ‘De Bure No. 3834' (unclear which sale). Francis Douce (1757-1834); armorial book-plate. Bequeathed in 1834.
