Binding: German blind-tooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, dated 1615; with two metal clasps, one of which is partly lost. On both covers fillets form five concentric frames; the inner rectangle is divided by vertical fillets into four compartments. In the compartments two rolls: crocketed cresting and a foliate ornament; within the frames three different Renaissance rolls and the rolls from the central compartment.
Size: 408 × 287 × 120 mm.
Size of leaf: 381 × 252 mm.
Marginal notes and corrections in early hands.
On [a2r] an initial is supplied in interlocked blue and red with mayflowers and pen-flourishing in red; dotting in the margins. Principal initials are supplied in blue with pen-flourishing in red; other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red.
Provenance: Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Capuchins, BVM and S. Franciscus; partially deleted inscription on [a1r]: ‘Fratrum Minorum Capuccinorum Hildesiens[ium]'. Solley, anonymous sale (1831), lot 344. Purchased for £3. 9. 0; see Books Purchased (1831), 2, and Library Bills (1829-32), no. 252.
