Size of leaf: 425 × 276 mm.

On a5r, a contemporary south German ten-line initial ‘B' is supplied in blue, with white foliate scrolling, on a gold ground, decorated with a repeated small floral stamp, within an architectural frame, in yellow and green, in the vault of which is a coat of arms, quarterly 1 and 4 gules, 2 and 3 argent, over all a pitchfork in bend; the whole surrounded by a double border in red and pink, and red pen-work decoration. On g2v a four-line initial ‘I' is supplied in gold, decorated with the small floral stamp, on a blue ground with white foliate scrolling, edged in red, and with red pen-work decoration; on k5r a four-line initial ‘C' is supplied in gold, on a green ground with white foliate scrolling, edged in red, and with red pen-work decoration; on n4v, an eight-line initial ‘E' is supplied in red, with white foliate scrolling and red pen-work infill and decoration. Other initials, some with extensions into the margins, are supplied in red, blue, or interlocked red and blue. Paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue. Capital strokes in red.

Provenance: Baumburg, Bavaria, Augustinian Canons Regular, S. Margareta; inscription on a1r: ‘Monasterii Bamburg'. Duplicate from the Royal Library, Munich(?); pencil no. ‘11' on a1r and a2r. Acquired between 1847 and c.1892, possibly in 1850; not found in Catalogus (1843), with Appendix.

Wanting the blank leaf a1.

Binding: Contemporary Bohemian(?) blind-tooled calf over wooden boards; on each cover five bosses and four corner-pieces lost, also two clasps. On both covers a single fillet forms an outer border; in the upper and lower sections are five repeated stamps: a trefoil stamp, a small star stamp, a left-hand and a right-hand curve stamp, and a cresting stamp; in the inner and outer sections, a repeated small floral stamp. Double fillets form an intersecting double frame, within which is a repeated ‘Maria' scroll stamp and the small floral stamp. The inner rectangle is divided into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments by triple fillets containing a repeated lattice-work stamp; in the compartments a rosette stamp, the small floral stamp, a larger floral stamp, a fleuron, a small star stamp, and a repeated small foliate stamp. On the spine a repeated lattice-work stamp and the repeated cresting stamp.

Early marginal notes and pointing hands.

On a2r a nine-line initial ‘I' is supplied in blue, decorated with red pen-work and extensions into the margin. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue.
