Calendarium and Psalterium only.

Wanting the blank leaf [1 a1].

The last gathering is of the setting-up of GW 5266 (I,3). Leaf [1 a2] backed.

Binding: Contemporary German blind-tooled calf over paper boards; rebacked, at which time the upper board was apparently put in place of the lower, upside down, and the lower board in place of the upper. On the present upper cover triple intersecting fillets form a triple frame; within the outer is a lattice-work and flower-petal roll; within the second is a foliate roll inhabited by unicorns(?), dragons, and monkeys. The inner rectangle is divided by further triple fillets into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments. On the present lower cover a floral roll forms an outer border. Triple fillets form a frame, within which is a repeated scallop-shell stamp and a repeated floral stamp. Within this, triple fillets form the inner rectangle, which is divided into triangular compartments by a saltire formed by triple fillets and decorated with the repeated scallop-shell stamp and a repeated small floral stamp. The triangular areas of the inner rectangle are decorated with the lattice-work and flower-petal roll and the repeated scallop-shell and larger floral stamps. Letter-stamping at the foot of the lower cover: ‘Psalterium'. The spine is gold-tooled.

In Calendarium, on [1 a5r], ‘Eodem die [26 Mar.] anno MDXI aput Mare Hadrianum et in Foro Julio [Friuli] fuit ma[xi]mus terre motus quem et Augu[stae] Vindelicorum [Augsburg] sentiuimus [p]luit grandini non sine damno'; on [1 a6v], in red ink, ‘Anno MDX die 21 eiusdem mensis Caesar Maximilianus Augustus fuit in nostris aedibus et bibliotheca per tres horas'.

Woodcut and initials are coloured in red, yellow, green, and blue wash. Text enclosed within single red rules.

Provenance: Probably Augsburg, Bavaria, Benedictines, SS. Udalrichus et Afra, 1510/11; inscriptions (see above); parliament met at Augsburg, 2 Mar.-May 1510, and Maximilian I is known to have been in Augsburg by at least 10 Apr.: see Hermann Wiesflecker, Maximilian I: Die Fundamente des habsburgischen Weltreiches (Vienna and Munich, 1991), 400.
