Binding: Nineteenth-century English blind and gold-tooled purple morocco with gilt-edged leaves, gold-tooled turn-ins, and purple pastedowns and endleaves; the latter watermarked with ‘Britannia' and ‘1823'.

Some marginal notes in black ink. On a4r, a cancelled note in the central margin.

On a1r and b6r 12-line initials are supplied in red, blue, and green with pen-work flourishes extending into the left margin; on k7r and n4v six-line initials are supplied in red and blue with pen-work flourishes in red, blue, and green extending into the margins. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied or marked in red or blue. Tabular diagrams bordered in red or blue. Some marginal headings are supplied in red.

Provenance: On a1r: ‘Ad usum fratris [ ]'. A circular stamp of the Virgin standing on a crescent, the surrounding inscription cancelled. Sir John Hayford Thorold (1773-1831), 10th Bt; monogram and Syston Park armorial book-plate. Purchased in 1885 (according to Sheppard), from William Ridler for £3. 10. 0; ‘Ridler 1885' on the front pastedown, ‘£3. 10. 0' on the verso of the front endleaf.
