Binding: Seventeenth-century German (Metten) blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, two clasps lost. On both covers fillets form two concentric frames; within the outer frame, a Renaissance roll with portrait medallions; within the inner frame, a floral border. The inner rectangle is divided into three horizontal compartments; in the corners of the central compartment is a lozenge-shaped floral ornament. In the centre of the upper cover is an oval stamp of the arms of Metten: quarterly, 1 and 4, nine fleurs-de-lys, 2 and 3, double-headed eagle, with an escutcheon en surtout: a fess and in chief a boy holding a cup, the arms of Johannes Christoph Guetknecht, abbot 1628-45; see Zimmermann, Kloster-Heraldik, 102; lettered ‘I[ohannes] C[hristophorus] A[bbas] M[ettensis] 1629'. On the lower cover an oval stamp of St Michael and the dragon. For the stamps see B‑324(2), also from Metten.
