Binding: Eighteenth-century French gold-tooled green morocco; marbled pastedowns; bound for MacCarthy Reagh; see the foliate roll with coronets on the turn-ins.

Some early marginal notes in black ink; other later notes in pencil.

On [a2r] a seven-line initial ‘U' is supplied in red, with green pen-work infill and decoration; on [a3r] a seven-line initial ‘F' is supplied in green, with red pen-work infill and decoration. On [r5v] a seven-line initial is supplied in interlocked blue and green, within a maroon border and with maroon infill and decoration. Other initials, many with extensions into the margins, are supplied in red or interlocked red and blue; paragraph marks are supplied in red. Capital strokes and underlining in red.

Provenance: Heavily erased inscription on lower margin of [a2r]: ‘Liber C[ ]'. Justin, comte MacCarthy Reagh (1744-1811); collation note on verso of front endleaf: ‘Collationné, complet, copie sans deffaut, prima editio. CMc' [Count MacCarthy]; similar note in Auct. The first gathering consists of 12 leaves, the first blank (not as BMC).

Binding: Eighteenth/nineteenth-century half calf over marbled paper boards.

Size: 320 × 227 × 35 mm.

Size of leaf: 314 × 210 mm.

On [a2r] a seven-line initial ‘U' is supplied in green, with red pen-work infill and decoration, and extensions into margins; on [a3r] a seven-line initial ‘F' is supplied in red, with green pen-work infill and decoration and extensions into the margins. Other initials, some with extensions into the margins, paragraph marks, and running book numbers are supplied in red. Capital strokes and underlining in red.

Provenance: Paulus [ ]; cancelled signature on [a1r]. Berg am Laim, Bavaria (near Munich), Josephsburg, Franciscans; inscription on [a2r]: ‘ad PP Francisc. Josephsburg'. Acquired between 1847 and c.1892; probably in 1850; not in Catalogus (1843) with Appendix.

Wanting the blank leaves [a1] and [v5-6].

Binding: Contemporary German (Augsburg, Kyriß workshops nos 89, 90) blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with metal catches; the spine covered in green morocco for Francis Douce. On both covers a single fillet forms an outer frame, within which is a bird stamp (Kyriß pl. 181, no. 8). Triple fillets form an inner frame, within which are the bird stamp and a repeated rectangular floral stamp (Kyriß pl. 183, no. 7) on the upper cover, and, on the lower cover, a large square rosette stamp (probably Kyriß pl. 183, no. 2, but the stamps are badly worn). On both covers, the inner rectangle is divided into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments, decorated with a lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis stamp (Kyriß pl. 183, no. 6) and a small flower-petal stamp.

Copious early marginal notes. On [v4r] a work on the Lutheran position regarding saints, Incipit: ‘De sanctis quod sequitur . . .' On the lower pastedown, a note in German.

Bamberg, Bavaria, Jesuit convent, 1611; cancelled inscription on [a2r]: ‘Collegii Societatis Jesu Banibergae, 1611'; gift from Johann von Aschhausen: inscription on [a2r]: ‘Ex liberali donatione r[euere]n[d]i atque illustrissimi principis ac domini domini Joannis Godefridi, episcopi Bambergi et praepositi Herbipolensis, 1611'.
