1. Gaius Plinius Secundus, Historia naturalis. Venice: Bartholomaeus de Zanis, 12 Dec. 1496 (P‑369).
Binding: Contemporary German calf over bevelled wooden boards. Two metal clasps and catches. On both covers triple fillets form a double intersecting frame. Other later decoration added c.1690, gold-tooled, now largely tarnished. Along the vertical section of the outer frame nearest the spine a repeated floral stamp; at the four intersections of each frame a rosette stamp; within the upper and lower sections of the inner frame lettered ‘PLINIVS | BIB HAL' and ‘1690'. Within the inner rectangle a repeated floral stamp. Spine: sewn on four wide double bands; between each band triple fillets form a frame, containing a repeated floral stamp; ‘270' also stamped; ‘Plinius | Celsus' in seventeenth-century manuscript, now faded. ‘PLINIVS | CELSVS' in contemporary manuscript in brown ink across the fore-edge. Not in Books Purchased (1835), but marked in the Bodleian copy of Kloß's sale catalogue; an accession date of 1835 is indicated in ‘Catalogus Bibliothecae Novae', fol. 108r.
