Binding: Eighteenth-century red morocco; bound for the Bodleian Library c.1790, by Henry Walther; ticket on verso of front endleaf. Gold fillets on both covers; Greek key border on the turn-in; marbled pastedowns; gilt-edged leaves; the gold stamp of the Library on both covers.

Size: 292 × 208 × 57 mm.

Size of leaf: 279 × 190 mm.

Sixteenth-century(?) marginal notes. Some manuscript corrections to the text. Also pen-trials by Pastrovichi on [A10v].

On [a1r] a six-line Roman initial ‘E' is supplied in blue, on a gold ground edged in black, decorated with filigree, and curling acanthus leaves in maroon and green, and with a foliate border in blue, green, maroon, and gold; similar initials in maroon, blue, and pink, at the beginning of each Book, the ‘Q' at the beginning of Book 8 ([l1v]) containing a human face drawn in black ink; other initials are supplied in red or blue, with red pen-work decoration in the area defined by the letter, decoration and extensions into the margins. Rubric headings and book numbers are supplied in red. Greek text supplied in manuscript. See Pächt and Alexander II, 106 no. pr. 2.

Provenance: Luca Pastrovichi (seventeenth century(?)); inscription on [A10v]: ‘Luca Pastrouichi'. Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); on [A10v] a pencil note of sale (1789), part III, lot 5562; in the annotated catalogue marked down to Payne for Fl. 325.
