Leaf [n6] hinged.

Binding: Nineteenth-century red morocco; bound by H. Walther(?), decorated with gold fillets and with a gold Greek key roll on the turn-in; marbled pastedowns; gilt-edged leaves.

Size: 345 × 238 × 31 mm.

Size of leaf: 333 × 216 mm.

Early marginal notes and pointing hands. On [n6r] a pen-trial in a humanist hand, apparently copying the beginning of the final letter, printed on the facing page.

On [a1r] a seven-line Italian initial ‘E' is supplied in gold on a ground of blue, green, and maroon, decorated with reserved white vine-stems and filigree in yellow and grey. See Pächt and Alexander II, 114 no. pr. 130. In the lower margin is a shield, with a now indistinguishable coat of arms, on a maroon ground, within a wreath of green leaves. Other epigraphic initials are supplied in red or blue. Some rubrics are supplied in an early hand in red or in black ink.

Provenance: Maffeo Pinelli (1735-1785)(?); see Morelli (1787), probably II no. 3781; sale (1789), lot 8682. Possibly Thomas Pownall (1722-1805); purchased at the Pinelli sale for £10. 10. 0, according to the annotated sale catalogue; note by Heber on the recto of the front endleaf: ‘This same ed. I rather believe this identical copy was bought at the Pinelli sale for £10. 10. 0 by Mr. Pownall (vide Sale Catal. 8682)'. Richard Heber (1773-1833); see Catalogue, 6 (1835), lot 1080.
