Leaves [a2-4] repaired.

Binding: Eighteenth-century mottled calf; gold-tooled spine; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Spine damaged.

Size: 329 × 240 × 37 mm.

Size of leaf: 320 × 222 mm.

Early marginal and interlinear notes, mainly providing synonyms, frequent on the first few leaves; underlining in the text in black ink; pointing hands. In the lower margin of gatherings [q] and [r] extracts of the Lord's Prayer in Latin in a sixteenth-century hand; other pen-trials and scribbles in the lower margins of gatherings [f] and [g]. On [r6v]: ‘Mediolani' erased.

Some initials at the beginning of books are supplied in black ink; other initials are supplied in red or blue.

Binding: Eighteenth-century English gold-tooled red morocco by Christopher Chapman, London. On both covers double fillets form a frame, within which is a floral roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 13) and a decorative roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings', pl. 14, Chapman roll 5). The spine is decorated with two ornamental corner tools (Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 15, nos 1a and 1b) and two small fleurons, not identified with any of Chapman's tools. The turn-in is decorated with an ornamental roll in which three-quarter circles, containing alternately a sun and an anthemion, themselves alternate with a fern (Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 14, Chapman roll 2).

Epigraphic initials are supplied in red; underlining in red. Rubricator's date ‘1474' in faded brown ink, within the initial ‘E' on [a2r]. Some running book numbers are supplied in black ink.

Provenance: Perhaps Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); perhaps the copy listed in London, BL, MS. Harley 3886, fol. 127; reference in Heber catalogue; but not found in Catalogus Bibliothecae Harleianae; upper corner of the front endleaf not cut off, as in other Harleian books. F. M. Spehlen, (eighteenth century?); signature on [a2r]. Richard Heber (1773-1833); see Catalogue, 6 (1835), lot 1077, where this is noted as being the Harleian copy. Perhaps the copy purchased for £1. 16. 0; see Books Purchased (1841), 9.
