The compilation derives from an extant manuscript of Vegetius (Paris, BnF, Lat. 6503, s. ix), it first appears in manuscripts of the fourteenth century ascribed to Cicero (an ascription implicit in this edition Pr 4030), and it acquired the ascription to Modestus in an edition printed no later than 1474 (Pr 3489, M‑285); see M. Occasional marginal annotations, now mainly washed out; the gatherings are signed in an early hand.
On [1b3r] an Italian five-line epigraphic ‘Q' is supplied in gold, surrounded by white vine-stem scrolling defined in red, blue, or green, extending into the inner margin; see Pächt and Alexander II, 107 no. pr. 22. Some other initials are supplied in blue. Manuscript foliation is supplied in black ink.
