Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled green calf; marbled pastedowns.

Size of leaf: 284 × 190 mm.

Copious early marginal notes in two hands, one using red and the other brown ink, both extracting key words or phrases; a few summaries in brown ink; ‘nota' marks, some in red or purple ink.

Provenance: Louis César de la Baume le Blanc, duc de La Vallière (1708-1780); number ‘V.2282'; sale catalogue, lot 2282. Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); printed label of the sale (1789), part II lot 1751; according to the annotated catalogue bought in by P. den Hengst for Fl. 10, the equivalent of £0. 17. 6, using the exchange rate used by Payne at the sale. Charles-Pierre-Joseph Le Candele (1761-1830), baron de Gyseghem; armorial book-plate: see Linnig 65; sale, 1838. Purchased for £1. 5. 0; see Books Purchased (1838), 7.

Binding: Quarter parchment over marbled paper boards; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers.

Size of leaf: 285 × 201 mm.

Copious early marginal and interlinear notes in a number of English hands; interlinear notes mainly providing synonyms; marginal notes commenting and summarizing the text.

Provenance: John Shawe (sixteenth century); inscriptions on [a2r]: ‘for d John Shawe'; ‘per me Johannem Shawe'. Thomas Rawlinson (1681-1725); sale (22 Jan. 1727/8), lot 3355, for £0. 1. 6. Possibly part of the Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755) bequest of 1755; the present shelfmark indicates a date of acquisition before c.1818.
