Copy number: G-085(1)

Wanting the blank leaves Cc8,2 A1,2 Hh6. Sheet4 Q4.5 was missing at an early stage; see a note in a fifteenth/sixteenth-century hand on4 Q3v: ‘hic deficit unum folium'; the present sheets were supplied from a smaller copy in 1863; pencil note ‘Supplied 1863' also on4 Q3v; as the note is in English, this was presumably after the acquisition by the Bodleian.

Bound in four volumes. Volume 1 contains the six preliminary leaves described in Polain. On4 R8r is the impression of a piece of type displaced from the forme.

Binding: Sixteenth-century German blind-tooled pigskin; on each volume two catches and clasps lost. The volumes are uniformly bound: on both covers triple fillets form concentric frames, within each of which is a different foliate roll. Further triple fillets form the inner rectangle containing an oval-shaped ornamental centre-piece and a decorative stamp at each corner. Green-edged leaves. Author and title in later manuscript in black ink on spine of each volume.

Size: Vol. 1: 278 × 208 × 80 mm; vol. 2: 278 × 203 × 83 mm; vol. 3: 278 × 208 × 73 mm; vol. 4: 279 × 203 × 93 mm.

Size of leaf: 265 × 190 mm.

Some early marginal annotations.

Initials are supplied, often over manuscript guide letters in brown ink, some with extensions into the margins, some with pen-work infill and decoration, and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; capital strokes and underlining in red. Leaf k1 has been signed by hand in red ink.

Provenance: Fürstenfeld, Bavaria, Cistercians, BVM and S. Bernardus; inscription on A2r of vol. 2, a2r of vol. 3: ‘Monasterii Fürstenueld'. Duplicate from the Royal Library, Munich; ‘Duplum' on the front pastedowns of vols 1, 2, 3, and on the front endleaf of vol. 4; shelfmark on the recto of the front endleaf of vol. 1: ‘III N.476'. Acquired after 1847; not in Catalogus (1843), Appendix; possibly acquired in 1850; certainly acquired before 1863; see note above.

SHELFMARK: Auct. 5Q 5.51-4.
