Wanting the blank leaf [bb8].

Bound in two volumes. Leaf [i4] is misbound after [i2]; the error has been noted in red in an early hand. Leaf [G2] is misbound after [G4]. The exact collation of some gatherings cannot be established in this parchment copy.

Binding: Eighteenth-century French red morocco over pasteboards, with the royal arms of Louis XVI on both covers of both volumes; see Olivier 2496(1). Gold-tooled spines and turn-ins, and marbled pastedowns.

Size: 490 × 340 × 85 mm.

Size of leaf: 480 × 330 mm.

On rear of original front parchment pastedown: ‘E. 69' and ‘E. 955. A.’

On [a1v] is a 20-line historiated miniature showing Christ seated holding a sword in both hands, in the foreground a pope, a cardinal, a king, and a courtier; see Melnikas, Corpus of Miniatures, I, 3-104. On the same leaf, a six-line initial is supplied in gold on a pink ground, a three-line gold initial (of Mainz?) on an azure ground; three three-line are supplied in blue initials edged in white on a gold ground; marginal floral and foliate decoration in gold, blue, green, pink, and yellow. Five- and six-line initials are supplied in interlocked blue and red with reserve white decoration and pink and green pen-work infill. Two-, four-, and five-line initials, paragraph marks and running chapter numbers are supplied in blue or red, and chapter headings are supplied in red.

Provenance: Tristan de Salazar (1431-1519), Archbishop of Sens; coat of arms in front of a pastoral staff on [a1r] and [n1r]: quarterly, one and four or, ten poplar leaves (3, 2, 3, 2), sable, two and three azure, ten stars (3, 2, 3, 2), or.
