Wanting the blank leaf a1; wanting a3, a4, I2, and cc12.

Binding: Contemporary German (Cologne, Kyriß workshop no. 95) blind-tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards, with two metal clasps and remains of catches. Four sets of triple fillets form an intersecting double frame. Within the outer frame are circular stamps with flowers and lions, and lozenge-shaped eagle stamps; the inner rectangle is divided by diagonal triple fillets into lozenge-shaped compartments with lozenge-shaped eagle stamps of two different kinds, and with a lozenge-shaped lion stamp; see Kyriß pl. 193, nos 1, 3, 4, and 6.

Size: 357 × 239 × 83 mm.

Size of leaf: 344 × 228 mm.

Pastedowns consist of an incomplete parchment document dated 1452, related to the Mendicant Orders and the legation of Nicolaus de Cusa to Germany.

A seventeenth/eighteenth-century manuscript alphabetical index on four leaves is bound at the end: ‘Index Decretalium Gregorij noni'. Some marginal annotations, extracting key words and correcting the text, in an early German hand. Running chapter numbers and foliation in the upper margin.

Three- to eight-line initials are supplied in blue, some with reserved white decoration.

Provenance: De Berges; eighteenth/nineteenth-century armorial book-plate, lettered ‘De Berges Conseiler'. Joseph Niesert (1766-1841); on a label pasted to a2r: ‘Bibliothecae J. Niesert, past. in Velen 1818'; purchased at his sale (1843), lot 323, for £0. 16. 0; see Books Purchased (1835), 22.
