The incipit on [a3r] is printed in red.

Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with remains of clasps. On the upper cover, double fillets form a triple frame; within the outer frame, a network of quadrilateral stamps and circular stamps with the symbol of John, the evangelist, in the four corners; an inner rectangle is divided by diagonal double fillets into lozenge-shaped and triangular compartments, each with a circular stamp of the symbols of the evangelists, a circular lamb-and-flag stamp, or a ‘Maria' scroll. On the lower cover, double fillets form an intersecting double frame; within the outer frame, the ‘Maria' scrolls and the circular stamps with the symbol of John in the four corners; the inner rectangle is divided by diagonal double fillets into triangular compartments, each with the ‘Maria' scroll, a circular phoenix, or a rosette stamp; see Goldschmidt I 137. A copy of the indulgence issued by Graf Rudolf von Werdenberg in 1480 [Memmingen: Albrecht Kunne, not before 1480] (W‑010), has been removed from the binding and is now shelved at Arch. B b.5(15).

The gatherings are signed twice in early red and early black ink, mainly cropped; the red signatures may be by Bartholomäus Mainhardj(?), the rubricator; his name is in red on [R6v].

Nine- to ten-line initials are supplied in blue. On [2 a2r] a 14-line initial is supplied in green and purple, with green, purple, blue, and yellow floral decoration, not complete, extending into the margin. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; capital strokes in red.

Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with metal clasps and catches; corner-pieces and centre-piece lost; on the metal clasps: ‘Mari. B. D. A. D. B. T.'. Formerly chained: staple-marks and nail of a hasp at the head of the lower cover. On the upper cover, triple fillets form concentric frames; within the outer frame acorn stamps and rosette stamps; within the next frame smaller rosette stamps; within the next frame lozenge-shaped foliate stamps, and palmette stamps; within the next frame lozenge-shaped stamps with an unidentified animal; an inner square compartment contains rectangular floral stamps surrounding the centre-piece. On the lower cover, double fillets form an intersecting double frame; within the outer frame the acorn stamps and rosette stamps; the inner rectangle is divided by triple fillets into eight triangular compartments, each with a quadrilateral decoration made of a square quatrefoil stamp surrounded by four pointed apexes. Manuscript title on a label at the head of the upper cover: ‘Hostiensis super primo et secundo decreti'. On the spine, manuscript title on a label at the head, and ‘B. VIII' on a label at the tail. Yellow-edged leaves. On a label in the front pastedown: ‘39.5', in an early hand.

Front and back endleaves consist of parchment leaves from a twelfth-century German Benedictional. Front endleaf, recto, incipit: ‘Oratio. Domine Ihesu Christe qui pie seruientibus tibi munificus retributor . . . In tempore synodi . . .' verso, incipit: ‘Benedictio prioris et cellerarii. Ipsi incipiant tribus uicibus. (Deus in adiutorium) tuam clementissime pater omnipotentiam supplices deprecamur ut infundere digneris super hunc famulum tuum quem tuo seruorumque tuorum seruitio mancipamus . . .'; back endleaf, recto, incipit: ‘ . . . Pro abbate . . .'; verso, incipit: ‘ . . . Pro papa vel episcopo defunctis. Deus qui inter apostolicos sacerdotes famulum tuum episcopum censeri fecisti presta quesumus ut quorum vicem gerebant ad horam in terris eorum perpetuo consortio letentur in celis . . .’

Early inscription on front pastedown: ‘Prima pars Hostiensis super primo et secundo libro decretalium'. The gatherings are signed in early black ink.

On [a3r] a ten-line initial ‘A' is supplied in blue with red, yellow, and green pen-work decoration; the area defined by the letter is red with gold pen-work decoration; a bearded human face emerges from the left-hand side of the letter, facing into the inner margin. On [p2r] a nine-line initial is supplied in interlocked red and blue with red and yellow pen-work decoration. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red, some with reserved white decoration; capital strokes in red.
