Binding: Eighteenth/nineteenth-century gold-tooled calf, with pastedowns and endleaves of decorated paper, gilt-edged leaves; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers.
Size: 333 × 234 × 52 mm.
Size of leaf: 324 × 212 mm.
Some pointing hands and ‘nota' marks.
Two- to six-line initials are supplied in red or blue; paragraph marks are supplied in red.
Provenance: At the foot of [a1r], an unidentified coat of arms of a Roman family, perhaps of ‘R. A.': barry of six, or and argent, the latter charged with triangles sable; in chief gules, a cross of the second between the letters ‘SPQR' of the first, the whole flanked by ‘R. A.' Pencil note on the recto of the front endleaf: ‘from the library of Pope Sixtus 5th' (Sixtus V, Pont. Max. 1585-90), for which there is no corroborative evidence. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823); armorial book-plate; shelfmark and inscription on the verso of front endleaf: ‘Cat. V 1.P 329 MMS Sledmere'; sale (1824), pt 1, lot 1381, for £4. 19. 0; Sykes's sale (1831), lot 1617. Purchased there for £2. 2. 0; see Books Purchased (1831), 8, and Library Bills (1829-32), no. 297.
