Bound in two volumes.

Gathering HH bound after gathering MM since early times: a manuscript note on GG8v: ‘post 34 folia' and on MM8v: ‘post 8 folia'.

Binding: Vol. 1: Eighteenth/nineteenth-century quarter calf; marbled paper boards; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers; vol. 2: Quarter calf, with wooden upper board and pasteboard lower cover, covered with marbled paper; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers; evidence of fillets from former blind-tooled binding visible under the marbled paper. Leather index tabs. Rebacked.

Size: Vol. 1: 446 × 297 × 53 mm; vol. 2: 451 × 300 × 88 mm.

Size of leaf: 431–4 × 273–81 mm.

Early marginal annotations, providing headings, pointing hands, and ‘nota' marks, some in red ink; foliation supplied in early black ink at the tail of the rectos of volume 1 only.

On a1r a ten-line German initial ‘M' is supplied in blue decorated with curling acanthus scrolling in black and white, on a green ground, and within the body of the letter, on a gold ground, the seated figure of S. Hieronymus dressed as a cardinal, facing towards the left, with his left hand on a book and his right holding a paw of his lion, who is seated in the right-hand corner; the initial has foliate and floral extensions into the margins in green, blue, maroon, pink, grey, and black, with gold dots. On A1r an eight-line German initial ‘P' is supplied in blue with curling acanthus scrolling in white on a burnished gold ground with punch dotting, all within a light and dark green border, with foliate and floral extensions into the margins in blue, green, pink, maroon, and grey, and gold dots. Other two- to four-line initials, some with extensions into the margins, are supplied in red or blue; paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; capital strokes in red.

Provenance: Kelheim, Bavaria, Franciscans, S. Maria; stamp ‘SKM' in a circle on the upper edges of both volumes. Eichstätt, Bavaria, Fürstbischöfliche Hofbibliothek, Bibliotheca Aulica; inscription on [*3r] and on [†2r]: ‘Ad bibliothecam aulicam Eystettensem'. George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834); sale (1821), lot 140; purchased for £1. 4. 0; see Books Purchased (1821), 8, and the annotated sale catalogue. It is possible that this is not the Spencer copy: it does not match the description in the Spencer sale catalogue, which calls for ‘an old monastic binding'; it might be a copy purchased later, replacing that acquired at the Spencer sale.

Former Bodleian shelfmark: Auct. P inf. 3, 4.

SHELFMARK: Auct. 7Q inf. 1.3, 4.
