Binding: Contemporary German (Kyriß workshops nos 39 and 40?) blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with the remains of two metal clasps on the lower cover. On both covers fillets form concentric frames. Inside the outer frame are a large palmette stamp and a large circular eagle stamp. Fillets form the inner rectangle which is divided by further triple fillets into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments on the upper cover, and into triangular compartments on the lower cover, both covers decorated with a lozenge-shaped eagle stamp (Kyriß pl. 87, ‘Nachfolger', no. 1), a small lozenge-shaped lion stamp, and a coat of arms stamp (a lion rampant impaled with fusils in bend; Kyriß pl. 87, ‘Alberthus', no. 5). Rebacked.

Size: 313 × 220 × 96 mm.

Size of leaf: 300 × 204 mm.

Occasional early annotations in red, including extraction of key words and underlining in the text. More extensive early notes in the upper margins of the De lapidibus. On the recto of the front endleaf a proverb in a sixteenth-century hand, ‘Contra vim mortis non crescit herba in hortis.’

Two- to seven-line initials, some with extensions into the margins, and paragraph marks are supplied in red; capital strokes and underlining in red.

This old fragment was given me by Mr [deletion] Jacob Richards, cook of Edmund Hall June 22nd 1711'. Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755); shelfmark. Presumably bequeathed in 1755.
