Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards. Clasps, catches, centre-piece, and bosses lost. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at the head of lower cover. Remains of a square paper book-label at the head of upper cover. Double fillets form a frame, within which is a repeated rectangular foliate stamp. A saltire formed by repeated small square artichoke stamps divides the inner rectangle into four triangular compartments, each containing lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis, triangular dragon, small lozenge-shaped eagle (or pelican?), floral, and ‘maria' scroll stamps. Greek cross, floral, and ‘maria' scroll stamps surround the frame.

Size: 293 × 220 × 87 mm.

Size of leaf: 289 × 200 mm.

A few marginal notes, extracting key words, in black ink in an early German hand, on both items. ‘Nota' marks and folio numbering: ‘1-202' in a different early hand.

Chapter headings, initials, paragraph marks, capital strokes, and gathering numbers are supplied in red in a contemporary German(?) hand.

Provenance: Duplicate from the Royal Library, Munich; Munich shelfmark, ‘Inc. typ. no. 1888' on slip pasted on front pastedown and ‘1888' on a small rectangular label at the head of the spine. Purchased for £1. 11. 6; see Books Purchased (1841), 39.
