Binding: Sixteenth-century German blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with two catches lost, and remains of two clasps. On both covers intersecting fillets form an outer frame, within which is an ornamental roll. Triple fillets form the inner frame, within which is a foliate roll. Further triple fillets form the inner rectangle, which is decorated with a fleuron in each corner and with the oval stamp of the monastery of Diessen as the centrepiece. Three paper labels on the spine, the one at the head bearing the names of the author and the title of the book, the one at the tail the number ‘28'; the label in the centre is too worn to be read.

Size: 230 × 175 × 40 mm.

Size of leaf: 222 × 157 mm.

Four- to six-line initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red; capital strokes and underlining in red; rubricator's inscription dated 1540 on R8r: ‘Bruder Bilg von Yspruck rubricauit hunc librum anno 1540'; the date of rubrication is given at the beginning of most of the alphabetical sections, and the rubricator's name appears in several other places in the book.

Provenance: Brother Egidius (fl. 1540); inscriptions on A1r: ‘Frater anno Domini 1540 Egidius'; and on A2r: ‘Frater Egidius', and frequently thereafter throughout the book. Diessen, Bavaria, Augustinian Canons, BVM; inscription on A1r in a seventeenth-century hand(?): ‘Monasterii Beatae Virginis in Diessen'. Duplicate from the Royal Library, Munich; ‘Dupl' in pencil on the verso of the front endleaf, and ‘2468' in pencil on the recto of the front endleaf. Acquired between 1847 and c.1892, probably in 1850; not in Catalogus (1843) with Appendix.
