Binding: Early eighteenth-century parchment, the spine covered by eighteenth/nineteenth-century gold-tooled calf, with green-edged leaves.

Size: 306 × 215 × 23 mm.

Size of leaf: 299 × 206 mm.

On rear endleaf a life of Varro, as yet unidentified, written in an early sixteenth-century Italian hand, stating that Varro was born in Provincia Narbonensis. Occasional marginal notes, mainly correcting the text, but also, in Varro, providing references to Josephus Justus Scaligerus, Coniectanea in M. Terentium Varronem de lingua latina and to Nicolaus Perottus, Cornucopiae sive commentariorum linguae latinae.

Provenance: Jacobus Cavallus (seventeenth century); inscription on a1r: ‘Ad usum Jacobi Cavalli'. Rome, Biblioteca Corsiniana ‘nova'; stamp on a1r. Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); printed label of the sale (1789), part III lot 3040; in the annotated sale catalogue marked down to Beeldsnyder for Fl. 3, the equivalent of £0. 5. 3, according to the exchange rate used by Thomas Payne at this sale. Purchased for £0. 7. 0: see Books Purchased (1855), 40.
