Binding: Contemporary German blind-tooled half pigskin over wooden boards, with two metal clasps and catches and metal studs. Yellow-edged leaves. Quadruple fillets form a frame, decorated with two different floral rolls, runnning vertically. The initials ‘ML' carved in the wood of the upper cover. The initials ‘AL' and ‘ML' incised in the catches. ‘N. 836' in an eighteenth(?)-century hand in brown ink on a rectangular paper label at head of the spine. Below, another paper label with the title, in the same hand.

Size: 212 × 153 × 55 mm.

Size of leaf: 202 × 142 mm.

Quotations from the New Testament and from Bernard on front endleaf, marginal notes, mainly extracting key words, and ‘nota' marks, also reference to similar exempla in the Speculum miraculorum, in red ink, in Lechner's hand. ‘32' on front endleaf in brown ink, probably in Johannes Redlamanno's hand. A gathering of 8 leaves has been inserted between the sermons de tempore and de sanctis, containing an alphabetical list of incipits in an early hand. Another inscription on rear pastedown, in a different German humanist hand: ‘Caveas a vogelis que portant schnebulas in dorsis. AR.’

Initials, paragraph marks, and chapter heading underlining are supplied in red; capital strokes in red.

Provenance: Andreas Lechner (sixteenth century); inscription on a1r in red ink: ‘Ex libris Andreæ Lechneri'; also his initials on front pastedown, in red ink, and on the binding. Nuremberg, Dominicans, Brother Pangracius Schwesser; inscriptions on the front pastedown: ‘Frater Pangracius Schwesser or[ator]is predicatorum Conuentus Nurenbergensis'. Johannes Redlamanno (fl. 1573), purchased at Bamberg; ‘Johannes Redlamanno propriam hat ergekaufft zu Pamberg des 1573 jares'. Langheim am Main, Bamberg, Cistercians, BVM, dissolved 1803; name and date 1673 on a1r. Purchased on 27 Dec. 1884 from Albert Cohn, catalogue 162, no. 1028, for 6 Marks; see Library Bills, no. 219.
