[a1r] Fontius, Bartholomaeus: ‘Proemio' [addressed to] Francesco Baroncini. Incipit: ‘[P]erche io fusse Francesco mio da le faccende et familiare et domestiche . . .’

[a1v] [Griffolinus] Aretinus, Franciscus: ‘Proemio' [addressed to] Malatesta Novellus. Translated into Italian by Bartholomeus Fontius from the Latin version of Franciscus Griffolinus Aretinus; see Tudeer 118, 122-3. Incipit: ‘[I]o vorei Malatesta Nouello principe illustre che mi fussi concessa nel dire tanta faculta . . .’

[a5v] Phalaris [pseudo-]: Epistole. Translated into Italian by Bartholomaeus Fontius. ‘Phalari ad Alcibo suo inimico'. Incipit: ‘[P]olicleto Messinese, il quale tu accusi falsamente a citadini . . .’

Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled calf; orange-edged leaves and marbled pastedowns.

Size: 208 × 155 × 17 mm.

Size of leaf: 202 × 150 mm.

On [a1r] a six-line initial ‘P' is supplied in gold within a square blue, red, and green ground which extends into the margin, decorated with white vine-stems and groups of three white dots; see Pächt and Alexander II, 110 no. pr. 64 (Veneto). On [a2r] an initial ‘P' is supplied instead of the correct ‘I'. Other initials are supplied in red or blue.

Provenance: Possibily purchased for £1. 11. 6; this price is in pencil on the front endleaf.
