Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco; gilt edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers.

Size: 304 × 208 × 46 mm.

Size of leaf: 294 × 187 mm.

Early marginal notes, including comments on the text and ‘nota' marks. On a2v is a note in French in a seventeenth-century(?) hand.

On a2r a seven-line initial ‘M' is supplied in blue edged in and decorated with gold. On a3r a seven-line Italian (Venice) initial ‘N' is supplied in maroon and pink with extensions in blue, green, and maroon, the space within the body of the letter decorated in blue, all on a gold ground edged in black with an outer border of gold, and with gold dots surrounded by spiralling pen-work; in the lower margin is a laurel wreath in green containing, on a red ground, a coat of arms (see below) flanked on each side by a gold dot surrounded by spiralling pen-work; see Pächt and Alexander II, 111, no. pr. 90. Other two- to seven-line initials, some edged in and decorated in gold, others decorated with red or black pen-work and with extensions into the margins, others plain, are supplied in red or blue; paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; some capital strokes are supplied in red. Some printed capitals on a2r and a3r have been painted over in gold.

Provenance: Unidentified coat of arms on a3r: or, on a bend sable three lozenges gules(?). Maffeo Pinelli (1735-1785)(?); Morelli (1787), II 2400(?); sale (1789), lot 7302, with the annotated sale catalogue giving no name of buyer. Purchased for £2. 6. 0; see Books Purchased (1789), 8.
