Binding: Seventeenth-century English calf, with triple blind-tooled fillets on each cover. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at the head of the upper cover. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library is on both covers. The upper cover is detached.

Size: 306 × 207 × 40 mm.

Size of leaf: 300 × 190 mm.

Manuscript index on two parchment endleaves. Copious early marginal notes in several hands, including comments on and corrections to the text, extraction of key words, ‘nota' marks, and pointing hands, also frequent underlining in the text in black ink. The popes' lives are numbered, 2-220, as references from the manuscript table of contents. Copious marginal notes and notes on the endleaves by Barlow.

Two- to ten-line initials are supplied in red or blue. Irregular manuscript pagination: 1-270; irregular manuscript foliation: 4-136.

Provenance: Thomas Barlow (1607-1691); inscription on the recto of the first parchment endleaf: ‘ Αἰὲν ἀριστεύειν Liber Thome Barlow e collegio Reginense Oxoniense MDCLVI III Cal. Augusti'. Bequeathed in 1691.
