At the beginning of each ‘Vita' is a seven- to twelve-line Italian epigraphic initial surrounded by white vine-stems defined in red, blue, and green, including foliate extensions with some gold dotting in the margins. At the beginning of some of the comparisons a three- to five-line epigraphic initial is supplied in gold, usually on a ground of red, blue, and green decorated in white. In the lower margin of a2r is a green laurel wreath edged in gold supported by two putti, and containing, on a maroon ground decorated in white, a coat of arms: vairy, argent and azure, the shield being surmounted by a bishop's mitre; the coat of arms is repeated in the lower margin of A1r, but without the supporters or the gold edging round the wreath. Running headings and book numbers (many now cropped) are supplied in red ink.
