[*1r] Augustinus [pseudo-: De Virtute psalmorum.] ‘Van den loue der salmen'. Incipit: ‘[D]it is vanden loue der salmen daer Augustinus sonderlinghe . . . [D]ie sanc der salmen heilighet dat lichaen . . .’ The original of the tract here said to be Augustine, De anima et spiritu, forms the opening portions of the pseudo-Augustinian De virtute psalmorum (BMC); for which see A‑581.

Wanting the first unsigned gathering of six leaves. Inserted is a printed title of a later date, not belonging to the edition, reading ‘De duytsche Souter des grooten Propheten Dauids . . .’

Gathering a differently set up: a1r: ‘Inuitatorium Laet ons aenbe= | dē de heer die ons ghemaect heeft | Ps̄ Venite exultemus .xciiij. | An̄t. Dient den heere Beatus vir | qui non abijt .i. | [S]Alich is die mā die | niet of ghegaen en | is indē raet d' gheē. | re die van gode ghe | keert ſijn . . .’

Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, with two metal clasps and catches. Rebacked. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Triple fillets form a triple frame. No stamps within the outer frame. Within the following frame a circular fleur-de-lis stamp and three different floral stamps. The inner rectangle is covered by the Bodleian stamp.

Size: 145 × 115 × 60 mm.

Size of leaf: 144 × 99 mm.

Principal initials are supplied in interlocked red and blue with reserved white decoration, and with blue and red pen-work decoration which extends into the margins to form a border decorated with gold dots; on a1r the border contains the figure of David with his harp. Other initials are supplied in red or blue.

Provenance: David Wilmsz (sixteenth century); inscription on front pastedown and on the verso of the inserted leaf with the title-page: ‘David Wilmsz camerlynck'. Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); printed label of the sale (1789), part I, lot 148; in the annotated catalogue marked down to Thomas Payne for Fl. 11.
