On [A2] an Italian illuminated epigraphic initial ‘N' is supplied in gold, surrounded by white vine-stems defined in red, with blue dotting, and green on a blue square, with white vine-stem extensions defined in blue and gold dotting; see Pächt & Alexander II, 107 no. pr. 23. Other initials are supplied in blue.
Provenance: Cardinal Johannes Castellar (1441-1503); coat of arms pasted in the lower margin of [A2r], surmounted by a cardinal's hat: quarterly, 1 and 4 gules, castle with three turrets, or; 2 and 3 of the second, nine piles in threes, of the first, and in chief three escutcheons, in base two of the same, bearing five small indeterminate charges. Purchased for £13. 17. 0; see Books Purchased (1795), 2.
