a1r [Johannes de Salerno: Editorial note.] Incipit: ‘Incipit liber uenerabilis fratris Simonis de Cassia . . .’ The note states that Simon de Cassia had started the book in Rome on 6 Sept. 1338 and died on 2 Feb. 1348, without completing the final revision, which was carried out by Johannes de Salerno, his pupil, who also translated all the work into Italian and wrote a life of S. Simon de Cassia in Latin; see Zumkeller 579.

Binding: Contemporary German blind-tooled pigskin, very worn, over wooden boards, with two metal clasps and catches. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at head of lower cover. Quadruple fillets form a triple frame. Within the outer frame a floral roll; within the following frame two thin different floral rolls. The inner rectangle is decorated with six thin foliate rolls running vertically. Strips from twelfth-century manuscripts visible in the binding. Eighteenth/nineteenth-century manuscript title on a rectangular paper label pasted at the head of the spine. ‘2' in red ink at the tail of the spine, below, ‘S. S.' printed on a square paper label. This label partially covers a large ‘B' in brown ink.

Size: 400 × 295 × 90 mm.

Size of leaf: 386 × 284 mm.

Occasional marginal notes, providing corrections to the text, extracting references to biblical quotations, and adding ‘nota' marks, in an early German hand, brown ink; on T1r in green ink.
