[a2r] Gotfridus, Episcopus Herbipolensis: [Statuta Synodalia Herbipolensia 1452.] Dated Würzburg, St Kilian, 7 Mar. 1452. It includes a list of the ecclesiastics present at the synod. Pr's statement (Pt II, p. 116) that ‘in the Bodleian is an edition of the Acta et decreta in concilio Herbipolensi 1452-53 [i.e. the Statuta synodalia here catalogued], which contains the date 1512 printed in the text' is a mistake, the date being in fact found in the last line of text of Newe Reformation des Lanndtgerichts des Hertzogthumbs zu Franncken, item 2 bound with the first copy.

Wanting the blank leaf [a1].

Binding: Sixteenth-century German blind-tooled pigskin; two sets of ties lost. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at the head of the upper cover. Green-edged leaves (except for the fore-edge). ‘I' in black across the head of the fore-edge. Rolls containing the initials H. R., i.e. Hans Rietzsch, of Würzburg; see Haebler, Rollen- und Plattenstempel, I 370. On the lower cover, panel stamp of St Kilian; on the upper cover, coloured circular stamp of the arms of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, 1573-1617: three shields, 1 and 2, arms of the bishopric, 3, Echter, on a bend, three annulets, with helms(?), crests, and lambrequins, the whole surrounded by a laurel wreath containing four shields bearing the arms of Echter and allied families; for reproduction see O. Handwerker, ‘Die Hofbibliothek des Würzburger Fürstbishofs Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn', Nordisk tidskrift för bok-hoc bibliotheksväsen, 12 (1925), 1-42, pl. 3.

Lined with leaves from a missal printed in Koberger's type 148 [Haebler 28].

Sixteenth-century manuscript signatures and foliation 1-134, in brown ink. In the same German hand frequent marginal notes, mainly extracting key words, in Latin and occasionally in German; also some pointing hands.

Provenance: Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1545-1617); his arms on the binding. John Selden (1584-1654); see MS. Broxb. 84. 10, p. 8. Presented in 1659.

Wanting the blank leaf [a1]. Gatherings [n–q] bound in the following order: q, p, n, o. Sheets [t2.5] and [t3.4] are bound in reverse order.

Binding: Nineteenth-century blind-tooled half calf over cloth. The title gold-tooled on a rectangular red leather label at the head of the spine. ‘C. E.' printed in black on a square paper label above it.

Size: 310 × 225 × 25 mm.

Size of leaf: 303 × 208 mm.

Early signatures partially visible. On [d6v] the following inscription in a contemporary German hand: ‘Der hat es ganz woll troffen pey dem ars im schlaf'.

On [a2r] a four-line initial ‘I' is supplied in red.
