Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco, apparently bound for Lord Harley by Christopher Chapman. For the stamps see Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 14, Chapman roll no. 5, also stamps, pl. 15, Chapman nos 3, 12, 13, 16, for the centre-piece, which resembles Nixon pl. 13. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers; marbled pastedowns.

Size of leaf: 290 × 188 mm.

Occasional marginal notes in two contemporary Italian cursive hands, supplying brackets, ‘nota' signs, three dots and tail, corrections to the text, and references to Cicero and Valerius Maximus on b2r and b4r.

On a1r and a3r two initials ‘P' and ‘S' are supplied in gold, on a mauve pen-work square with marginal extensions, the gold leaf of the first now almost entirely removed. Elsewhere initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue.

Provenance: Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); evidence of binding; upper corner of the front endleaf cut off. Ralph Palmer (eighteenth century); see erased inscription ‘Bibliotheca Palmeriana' on the recto of the front endleaf. Ralph Verney, 2nd Earl Verney (1712?-1791); damaged armorial book-plate (Howe, Book Plates, 30323). Richard Heber (1773-1833); see Catalogue, 6 (1835), lot 3718; paper label at foot of spine.
