Issue A.

Binding: Late eighteenth-century gold-tooled calf; ‘sunburst' gold-tooling on the spine. The title in gilt on red and green labels on the spine; blue-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; blue silk bookmark.

Size: 294 × 212 × 29 mm.

Size of leaf: 283 × 200 mm.

On a1r an eight-line contemporary Netherlandish(?) initial ‘C' is supplied in interlocked red and blue, with red and blue pen-work decoration so as to appear on a square ground; tiny red and blue pen-work extensions into the inner margin. Centre of lower margin: a circle of scrolls enclosing a nucleus supplied in red with blue pen-work extensions; on either side a recumbent fleur-de-lis is supplied in alternating red and blue halves. In the inner margin alternate red and blue fleur-de-lis halves flank the text. Similar to decoration in A. S. Korteweg, Kriezels, Aubergines en takkenbossen (Zutphen, 1992), 14 pl. VII and 129 no. 118 (S. Augustinus, De ciuitate Dei, Deventer, 1466; Ijssel-style decoration); also 51 no. 14 (Psalter, Utrecht, 1460-80). On [*2r] a four-line initial ‘T', and on a1v a four-line initial ‘D', are supplied in red, with blue pen-work within and outside the body of the initial so as to complete the form of a square; long blue extensions into the inner margin. Elsewhere three-line initials, paragraph marks, and underlining are supplied in red.

On o8r in a contemporary north European hand the note: ‘perfecte sciencie viro ac mihi fratri delectissimo Rub(?) v[?] perpetuo ecclesie parochialis de[ ] p . . . Bath. ex Wellensis | S[ ]qe eternam in domino Saltum homines me Banna edidisse et proclamasse per tres dies'; and in a later hand: ‘Ambrosio imponitur sententia non sua. 172.’
