Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled leather over oak boards, rebacked in the seventeenth/eighteenth century. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at the head of the lower cover. Four bosses from each cover lost. Three metal corner-pieces, the fourth lost. Two catches on upper cover lost; remains of two leather and alum-tawed laminate clasp straps on lower cover. On both covers triple fillets form two frames: within the inner rectangle triple fillets form a diagonal cross from corner to corner. Five sewing supports. On paper labels at the head of the spine the title in a sixteenth-century hand, and an old shelfmark ‘NhJ7' partly printed, partly manuscript. Thin white parchment pastedowns. Stubs of parchment endleaves, and four front and four rear paper endleaves. Edges cut with a draw knife, the tail edge retaining pin-holes. Internal parchment reinforcement guards, stuck down. Paper index tab on a3.

Size: 295 × 215 × 65 mm.

Size of leaf: 286 × 195 mm.

Occasional notes in a contemporary hand, providing ‘nota' marks and pointing hands in red and brown ink; arabic numbers structuring the text in red ink; a few comments on the text in Latin and Low German, some cropped; leaf numbers and running titles (e.g. ‘in die cinerum') in brown ink. A signature ‘h' in the lower right-hand corner of a3. Bookseller's number ‘M 27 12' in pencil on the rear pastedown.

On a3r an eight-line initial ‘Q' is supplied in red with reserved white decoration partly coloured in yellow; the left-hand tail of the letter extending down into the inner margin. The space within the body of the initial, and at the four outside corners, is filled with red, green, and yellow pen-work, so as to form a square ground. On the same page a four-line initial ‘N' is supplied in red ink with reserved white decoration, partly coloured in yellow, and with red pen-work extensions. Elsewhere four-line initials, some with similar pen-work decoration to that of the first initial; paragraph marks are supplied in red; capital strokes, underlining, and occasional flourishes in red.

Provenance: Maastricht, Brabant, Mons gratiae Dei extra Traiectum super Mosam, Observant Franciscans; inscriptions on the recto of the front endleaf: ‘Pro libraria fratrum minorum de vera observantia Montis gracie Dei extra traiectum super mosam', and ‘nunc denuo reductus anno 1651 5 maij'. Maastricht, Brabant, Lichtenberg, Observant Franciscans, S. Antonius de Padua; inscription on a2r: ‘Est biblioth. Montis Lucis'. Engelbert-Karl Arenberg, 10th Duke of Arenberg (1899-1974); unsigned note [by David Rogers] on the front pastedown: ‘From the library of the Duc d'Arenberg'.
