Wanting the blank leaves A1, A2, and &10. Leaves &4-7 are bound after z3.

Binding: Nineteenth-century(?) quarter light brown morocco over light brown pasteboards; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. On the spine imprint information is gilt on two rectangular square labels, in red and green leather; ‘S. M.' printed in gold at the foot of the spine. Sprinkled brown-edged leaves.

Size: 298 × 201 × 69 mm.

Size of leaf: 291 × 187 mm.

On &9r in Taraschoni's hand the following verses: ‘Stude puer pertransit etas mox frigida parce . . .' 10 lines; on &9v the following note in the same hand: ‘Nota como adi xvii de zugno 1493 in martidi mori Io. Laurentio Taraschon nostro fratello a Roma, era per farse uno homo dasay sel scampana, et ala sua morte se ghe trouo Io. Euangialista e Bernardo nostri fratelli. Deo sit semper laus honor gloria amen. Item eo anno die 19 augusti Johannes Euangialista va lontani detentus. Die 12 februari 1494 euassit, Romam apprehenditur(?)'. A few marginal notes, mainly translating Greek words into Latin, in an early hand, probably Taraschoni's, in brown ink.

On A3r a large Italian initial ‘C' is supplied in pink with darker pink and white pen-work decoration within a square gold ground edged in black. The area defined by the letter is decorated with a large thistle in gold, green, and red on a blue ground with white pen-work decoration; see Pächt and Alexander II, 114 no. pr. 137 (Lombardy?). Other main initials are supplied in red or blue, or red and blue, with reserved white decoration and elaborate red pen-work. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; capital strokes in red, in red and blue in the heading on A3r.

Provenance: Ambrogio Taraschoni (fl. 1493-1494); inscription on &9r: ‘Hic liber est mej Ambrogij Taraschonj q[uondam] dominj Bartolamej filius qui fuit uir somme probitatis conspicuus'; in the lower margin of A4r, within a wreath the coat of arms of Taraschoni. Parma, Benedictines, St John Evangelist, 1535; inscription on A4r on either side of the wreath: ‘Conuentus Parme | 137' and on A9r: ‘Conuentus Parme 1535'. Anonymous sale (Evans, 13 Jan. 1825), lot 840. Purchased for £8. 0. 0; see Books Purchased (1825), 25.
