Binding: Gold-tooled blue morocco, with pink satin doublures, by Bozérian the younger (fl. 1805-1818). Gilt-edged leaves and pink silk bookmark.

Occasional marginal notes, extracting key words, in an early hand in brown ink.

Leaf [*1r]: ‘¶ Caſtigationes errorum . . .', as BMC.

Binding: An Italian (Venetian?) binding of the late fifteenth/early sixteenth century. Brown goatskin over wooden boards bevelled inwards. Two clasps (lacking) hinged on the upper cover. Catches lacking. Blind-tooled with three concentric frames, the outermost of five lines, the others of four. Outer corners mitred. A cherub's head on each side of the outer border. The inner border filled with a lacework tool. An interlaced tool massed in a cruciform pattern in the centre, also decorated with a leaf tool and an arc. Gilt-edged and gauffered leaves, done in the eighteenth or nineteenth century. Edges of the boards decorated with five lines on the bevel. Double green and pink headbands. Sewn on three split thongs. Bands separated by a single thick line. Compartments decorated with a single-line diaper inside a four-line frame. Parchment pastedown and conjoint free endleaf at each end, probably not original. See De Marinis, Legatura, II, no. 1727 ter, tab. C 36 (as Venetian).

Heavily erased inscriptions in light brown ink on a2r and a3r. ‘N. 526' in light brown ink on the title-page, washed. A few marginal notes, mainly extracting key words in Latin and in Greek, and ‘nota' marks and pointing hands, in a contemporary humanist hand in brown ink.

Provenance: Giovanni Baptista Pinelli, name stamped in italic capitals on the title-page. William Dunn-Gardner (1816-1880); armorial bookplate. Cyril Dunn-Gardner (1874-1911); sale, lot 271. Ingram Bywater (1840-1914); Elenchus, no. 3440. Bequeathed in 1914.
