Binding: Eighteenth-century green morocco, the spine gold-tooled. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; red silk bookmark.

Size: 297 × 214 × 45 mm.

Size of leaf: 286 × 196 mm.

One or two marginal notes in a contemporary hand, supplying ‘nota' marks. The pencilled number ‘300' in lower left-hand corner of verso of the front endleaf. The notes ‘6a' and ‘Vendu Duc(?) Vali[]? chez M. D. L. V. 1500 . . . 600' in brown ink, and ‘White May 1789 £26.5' in red ink on verso of the front endleaf.

On [a1r] a six-line German initial ‘U' is supplied in interlocked red and brown ink with reserved white decoration. Similar initials are supplied at the beginning of each book of Valerius Maximus. Elsewhere one- to three-line initials are supplied in red or green ink, paragraph marks and underlining in red, and capital strokes in yellow.

Provenance: Metz, Lorraine, Celestines; inscription on [a1r]: ‘deae(?) Celestinorum de Metae'. Louis-Léon-Félicité Brancas, duc de Lauraguais (1733-1824); armorial book-plate: azure on a pale, three towers, between four lions' paws affronté issuant from the flanks of the shield; surmounted by a coronet; in the corners the initials ‘B. C. D. L'; see sale (1770), lot 771(?). Purchased for £15. 15. 0; see Books Purchased (1790), 8.
