Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco; bound by H. Walther for the Bodleian Library; the gold stamp of the Library on both covers. Gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; emerald silk bookmark.

Size: 346 × 242 × 33 mm.

Size of leaf: 335 × 218 mm.

Occasional marginal notes in a contemporary German hand, extracting key words and providing pointing hands, brackets, ‘nota' marks, comments summarizing passages of the work, gathering signatures, and book numbers in the upper margins.

On [a3r] a six-line initial ‘U' is supplied in blue ink with reserved white decoration. Elsewhere initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue ink.

Provenance: Probably Maffeo Pinelli (1735-1785); Morelli (1787), II 3033 (‘exemplar integerrimum atque splendidissimum'); sale (1789), lot 7934. Purchased, probably through Peter Elmsley, for £23; see the annotated sale catalogue and Books Purchased (1789), 6.
