Binding: Early eighteenth-century calf, the spine gold-tooled.

Size: 216 × 139 × 17 mm.

Size of leaf: 208 × 133 mm.

A few marginal notes in a contemporary French hand in red ink, supplying brackets and paragraph marks, and extracting key words. Pencilled number ‘18/6' on front pastedown; ‘17-6' on the recto of the front endleaf.

Initials, capital strokes, and underlining are supplied in red ink.

Provenance: Bookseller's circular label, numbered ‘[3]345' on a paper label on the head of the upper cover. William Constable (1721-1791); armorial book-plate; Catalogue of the Burton Constable Library of Printed Books (London: Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 27 June 1889), lot 871. Sheppard records that this item was purchased in 1889, presumably at the Constable sale, but it has not been identified in Library Bills.
