Wanting leaves x6–8 and gathering y, containing the Priapea.

The table on aa5v specifies ‘P. V. Maronis uita' as the first item in the book, and the commentary of Servius as accompanying the text. The first leaf is blank, and the text is without commentary. See note to edition of Zarotus, 20 Jan. 1481 (BMC VI 716 = London, BL, IB.26001). Sheets e2.7 and m3.6 are each misbound fourth in their respective gatherings.

Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco, apparently bound for Lord Harley by Christopher Chapman. For the stamps see Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 15, including Chapman 6, 8 (on spine), 11, and 16; for the rolls see pl. 14, Chapman nos 1, 2 (at head and base of spine), and 3. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on an oval of tan leather on both covers, obscuring Harleian centre-piece. Marbled pastedowns.

Size: 312 × 212 × 48 mm.

Size of leaf: 300 × 184 mm.

A few marginal notes in a fifteenth-century hand, mainly supplying catchwords at the ends of gatherings and the lemma ‘surgat eques milles aut superatus eat' on a1r. The same hand also supplies leaf numbers in upper margins and leaf references in the table. Some marginal notes in an early sixteenth-century French(?) hand, supplying brackets, headings, ‘nota' marks, and book numbers in upper margins.

Two- to seven-line initials, some with reserved white decoration, and paragraph marks are supplied in red.

Provenance: Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); evidence of binding and remains of label, ‘no. 3676', on spine; purchased by Thomas Osborne; see Catalogus Bibliothecae Harleianae, I no. 3676. Purchased for £13; see Books Purchased (1825), 26.

SHELFMARK: Auct. N inf. 2.11.
