The signatures of N1 and N4 are printed on small square pieces of paper and pasted over.

Binding: Contemporary German(?) blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, much worn; rebacked. Two clasps and catches missing. Quadruple fillets form a double frame. Within the outer frame a repeated circular rosette stamp. In the inner rectangle curved-outline tools make up merrythoughts, each containing a lozenge-shaped floral (thistle?) stamp.

Size: 312 × 212 × 80 mm.

Size of leaf: 300 × 197 mm.

Capital strokes in red in gatherings a–y only.

Provenance: Catalogue of the Miscellaneous Libraries of B. M. Oliver Esq. and Other Private Collections (London: Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 17 Nov. 1868), lot 677. Purchased by the Bodleian through Charles J. Stewart for £16; see Library Bills (1869), no. 101.

Three marginal notes, providing a correction to the text and extracting key words, in two different early hands in brown ink.

Principal initials are supplied in interlocked red and blue; other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue.

Provenance: Francis Douce (1757-1834); armorial book-plate. Bequeathed in 1834.
