Sams, Joseph (1776?–1860); antiquarian bookseller, Darlington, Prospect Place, 10 Prebend Row 1834-60; sale catalogue, A Descriptive Catalogue of a Valuable Collection of Books in Various Languages..., 3 pts (London, 1822-6), the Bodleian copy of pts 1 and 2 (shelfmark: 2593 e.85) having two manuscript lists inserted at the end, both in the same hand, apparently that of Sams himself, one (fols 1-5) entitled `Books printed in the 15th century not in the catalogue', the second (fols 6-7) entitled `Books printed by the Alduses not in the catalogue'; another catalogue was also produced in the 1840s; his books and manuscripts were sold by Puttick and Simpson, 2 Nov. 1860; see Boase III 397, who gives his date of birth as 1784; DNB also gives this date of birth; C.
